The Faculty of Economics at Wakayama University has a long and distinguished history, which traces its origins to Wakayama High Commercial School and has now surpassed its 100th anniversary. With a strong foundation of trust, cultivated by generations of alumni, our students continue to thrive and make meaningful contributions across various industries and government sectors.
At the Faculty of Economics, what kind of skills and abilities do we expect students to develop through their academic journey?
One might assume that studying economics is simply about acquiring specialized knowledge. While this is certainly essential, our faculty members aim to go beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge. We encourage students not only to gain expertise in economics but also to develop the ability to apply their knowledge to address complex economic and social challenges.
Solving contemporary economic and social issues requires more than a deep understanding of economics alone. It demands a broad perspective that encompasses human behavior, societal structures, the natural environment, and advancements in science and technology. Furthermore, in today's world, vast amounts of data are continuously generated from various activities and their outcomes. The ability to process, analyze, and interpret this data objectively and make informed decisions is becoming increasingly important.
Most challenges cannot be solved by an individual alone. Many require regional or even global cooperation. Thus, developing strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups of people is essential for finding solutions.
At the Faculty of Economics, we have designed our curriculum to equip students with specialized knowledge of economics, interdisciplinary insights, data-driven analytical skills, and the ability to engage in meaningful dialogue and teamwork. We encourage students to take initiative in their learning, make continuous efforts, and cultivate these essential skills. Our faculty is committed to supporting and fostering each student's academic and personal growth.
