‘Overtourism?’ Perspectives and a Research Agenda
Overview
The growth of tourism is generating unprecedented pressure for some tourist destinations, creating tensions between local residents and tourist and also leading to the damage to the natural environment. The term ‘overtourism’ has been used by media agencies and academics to describe both residents’ hostility toward tourists and the negative environmental impacts of tourism. Political leaders and industry have come under increasing pressure to respond to the problem through more effective management and regulation.
The seminar presentation argues that a strong evidence base is required to help guide policy makers to make better decisions regarding ‘overtourism.’ Two potential research themes are outlined and discussed in the seminar to contribute toward a better understanding of the issue and possible solutions: (1) understanding resident attitudes and reactions toward tourism and (2) understanding the downstream impact of policies to manage the impact of tourism.
